Y - Yttrium
Atomic Number: 39 Period Number: 5 Group Number: 3
Yttrium is a silvery transition metal and it is rare-earth material. Rare-earth minerals and uranium ores are the main sources for yttrium. There is only one isotope of yttrium in nature: 89Y.
Pure yttrium is used alloys, which can help increase the strength of aluminum. It also can catalyze some reactions, such as ethylene polymerization. There are also many medical applications that it is used for. Yttrium oxide is the most important compound of yttrium. It is used to make the high-temperature superconductor YBCO (yttrium barium copper oxide).
