Yttrium was first discovered from Carl Axel Arrhenius in 1787 near Ytterby, Sweden (where it got its name). For those of you who have not been there, it’s very nice in the summer. Common end uses of the element are lasers, semiconductors, electronic filters and the likes. Very high tech end uses because the primary use is in creating phosphors. There are also many medical applications that it is used for.
